Local guidance

Community ethic The monument's sandstone is fragile and very easily damaged when wet, and gear placed in wet sandstone isn't safe: wait for it to dry. Park rules close climbing near rock art, tunnel portals, overlooks and nest sites. NPS: Rock climbing ↗

Check the rock yourself

Rain gauges measure rain, not rock moisture. Sandstone is weak when wet and holds water long after the surface looks dry, especially on shaded or seepy faces. If the ground is damp, the rock is too.

Is it actually dry?
